Senator Alicia “Chucky” Hansen, who will leave office in January because she did\u00a0not amass enough votes to win a seat in the 31st Legislature, is calling for a recount, stating that she was made aware that about 5,000 votes were cast for her in the November 4 General Election.<\/p>\n

The veteran senator recently made the rounds to local news outlets, including Alvin Gee’s VI News Now<\/em>\u00a0107.9 FM radio broadcast, where she said she was “surprised” the election results did not provide information about the number of\u00a0write-in votes, giving only “variations of the name” used that were\u00a0counted as ballots cast for her. The letter requesting a recount was addressed to the Chairperson of the Joint Boards of Elections, Alecia Wells.<\/p>\n

The certified results of Election 2014 confirm that of the 3,282 write-in votes cast, Hansen collected 2,089 of them, including sticker votes, well behind the 2,666 votes she would need to match Senator Nereida “Nellie” Rivera-O’Reilly’s 4,755 count.<\/p>\n

It is unclear where Hansen received information about the uncounted\u00a0ballots she says that were cast for her.<\/p>\n

Hansen\u2019s name was taken off the General Election ballot by order of the Supreme Court on Oct. 24, due to lengthy court battles citing moral turpitude and then the senator\u2019s late filing of her nomination papers for the November 4 elections. Hansen then launched an aggressive write-in campaign and days before the election, her supporters were also informed they could paste the Senator\u2019s name onto the ballot with pre-printed stickers containing the name \u2018Alicia \u201cChucky\u201d Hansen.\u2019<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
