A masked man broke into the apartment of a woman living in the Mutual Homes Housing Community in Grove Place, St. Croix at about 2:15 a.m. on\u00a0Monday, Feb. 16, stealing a chip from the victim’s cellphone, but leaving her unharmed, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson announced.<\/p>\n
According to Jackson, the victim told police she secured the bottom lock on her front door roughly around 11 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15 after a relative had left the home. However, the victim said she had\u00a0forgotten to secure the security latch on the door before going to bed.<\/p>\n
Then, at around 2:15 a.m. on Monday, the victim said she was\u00a0awakened by a presence in her bedroom and observed a black male, standing at about 5’6″ tall, and wearing all-black clothing and a mask covering his face, standing in her room. The intruder watched\u00a0the victim as she screamed, and proceeded to slowly walk out of the victim’s bedroom and exit the apartment through the front door, leaving it open.<\/p>\n
The intruder stole a chip from the victim’s\u00a0cellphone, but did not harm her.<\/p>\n
The victim believes the suspect may have gained access to the apartment by a key that was accidentally left in the front door. The key has not been recovered by police.<\/p>\n
