A St. Croix man who recently traveled to St. John to perform heavy-equipment work died Friday when the crane he was traveling in\u00a0went over an embankment, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson announced.<\/p>\n
According to Jackson, the victim was a passenger in the crane\u00a0traveling down Kings Hill on Northshore Road, when the driver apparently lost control of the machine\u00a0and it went into the embankment on the right side of the roadway where it rolled onto its left side.<\/p>\n
The crane then slid on the roadway until it went over the left hillside, going about 25 ft. down. The men were traveling to\u00a0Cinnamon Bay to do some work for the National Park Service when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n
The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. According Jackson, the driver of the crane apparently lost control of the machine.<\/p>\n
V.I. Fire Service, EMS and St. John Rescue reported to the scene of the accident to assist. Members of St. John Rescue used the “Jaws of Life” to extricate the men, which took several hours due to the severity of the accident and terrain.<\/p>\n
The seriously injured man, whose name has not been released, was transported to the Roy L. Schneider Regional Hospital on St. Thomas where he was listed in stable condition.<\/p>\n
