On Wed., April 1, Strand Street in Frederiksted town will become a one-way street operating in a northerly direction from the blocks between Hill and Market Streets, St. Croix police is reminding the motoring public.<\/p>\n

According to VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson, motor vehicles may continue to park on the left shoulder of Strand street. Once the signage is posted for one-way traffic, however, all vehicles must be driven only in that direction.<\/p>\n

In early February<\/a><\/span>, Senator Kenneth Gittens,\u00a0chairman of the Committee on Rules and Judiciary, called on\u00a0police\u00a0Commissioner-designee Delroy Richards, Sr. and Public Works Commissioner-designee Gustav James collaborate with each other to inform and educate the public of the change.<\/p>\n

Act No. 7709, designating Strand Street in Frederiksted \u2013 specifically the block between Hill and Market streets \u2013 a one-way street that will operate in a northerly direction, “came to the Senate after a breakdown in communication between the departments,\u201d Gittens said. \u201cNow that it has been made law, we need to ensure that the agencies open the lines of communication, and conduct public notification and education for the knowledge and safety of our motoring public.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sen. Gittens said proper signage should be\u00a0posted in the area and roadway identifying parking perimeters and directional flow of traffic, which should be completed before the implementation date.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is imperative that we take into consideration the impact of this change to the motoring public and alert the general public in advance,\u201d Gittens continued. \u201cBecause of this change, our public information strategy must be aggressive to avoid congestion in the area and avoid any potential security breaches at nearby businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n

The change is made pursuant to the 30th<\/sup> Legislature’s passage of a law through Act No. 7709, signed by then-Governor John de Jongh in Dec. 2014.<\/p>\n
