ST. CROIX \u2013 Sen. Kenneth Gittens said Tuesday he has written to Gov. Kenneth Mapp seeking a proclamation to observe National Teacher Appreciation Week \u00a0from May 4-8.<\/p>\n
Gittens, the chairman of the committee on Rules and the Judiciary, said that \u201cchildren are one of the most important assets in any society, therefore those that guide and nurture them must always be acknowledged.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOur youngsters represent the future of these islands and they are an indication of the direction our society will take,\u201d he said. \u201cIt must be noted that we entrust our teachers with molding, nurturing and being the individuals who have the greatest impact on the success of our youth and our society on a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n
The United States began observing National Teacher Appreciation Week in 1980 from May 4-8 and observes May 5th as National Teacher Appreciation Day. Gittens said the territory should do the same thing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to applaud our teachers, for they are the ones who can motivate a student at a young age to realize the value in learning and a solid education as they provide a great service not only to that child, but also to society,\u201d he said. \u201cI have asked the governor to declare the observation by proclamation and issue a resolution to honor and commend our teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n
Gittens said he hopes teachers realize the awesome responsibility they hold to develop a child to their full potential and asked the general public to participate in this national and local observation of teachers.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnyone who has ever been inspired by a teacher should be eager to stop and reflect on those memories and show some appreciation to teachers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
