ST. CROIX — A man riding a bicycle this morning was struck by a taxi van and later succumbed to his injuries at the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson has announced.<\/p>\n

According to Jackson, at roughly 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, the 911 emergency call center received notification of a severe vehicular accident that occurred on the Queen Mary Highway, in the area of Estate Hannah’s Rest.<\/p>\n

Officers working with the traffic investigation bureau responded to the scene of the accident near the Amigo Gas Station, and spoke to several witnesses who gave their accounts of what happened.<\/p>\n

According to preliminary reports, the witnesses stated that a taxi van was traveling from east to west on the Queen Mary Highway near the gas station when, at the same time, a male individual on a bicycle was traveling from west to east, Jackson said.<\/p>\n

The witnesses said the individual riding the bicycle then blew a whistle and made a signal as an indication that he was about to cross the street. However, as the man proceeded to move across the street on his bicycle, the west-bound taxi van slammed into the cyclist causing him to crash on the side of the road, with his mangled bicycle a few feet away.<\/p>\n

An ambulance responded to the accident and carried the victim to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n

He was later identified as\u00a0Bienvenido Camacho, 61 of New Street, Frederiksted.<\/p>\n
