ST. CROIX \u2013 A 25-year-old Estate Grove Place man pleaded guilty Thursday in District Court in Estate Golden Rock to one count of possession of prison contraband, U.S. Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe said.<\/p>\n

As part of his plea, Shevron Percival of Lorraine Village Apartments admitted that on October 26, 2012, while he was an inmate at the Golden Grove Adult Correctional Facility, Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections (BOC) officers discovered a cellular telephone tied up in the waist string of the basketball shorts he was wearing, Sharpe said<\/p>\n

Percival was being held at Golden Grove prison in connection with an armed robbery in Lorraine Village on May 10, 2011, when he was arrested for his alleged involvement with the shooting death of Christopher Rice in Lorraine Village on Aug. 11, 2011.<\/p>\n

Cellular telephones are prohibited contraband in correctional facilities because they are known to be used by prisoners to intimidate witnesses, orchestrate narcotics transactions, and to facilitate other criminal activity, including murders, according to Sharpe.<\/p>\n

Possession of prison contraband carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine. Sentencing is scheduled for September 9.<\/p>\n

The case was investigated by the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rami S. Badawy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
