ST. CROIX — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority announced on \u00a0Sunday that due to a fire at the St. Croix transfer station, residents and waste haulers will not have access to the site on Monday.<\/p>\n
According to the press release, smoke was reportedly coming from the transfer station after the close of business on Sunday afternoon. A smoldering fire was discovered in a green waste pile, and the VI Fire Service was called to extinguish the flames and continued to monitor \u00a0the site overnight.<\/p>\n
While closed to the public on Monday, WMA employees will remove the impacted waste and clean the area. The facility is expected to reopen at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Residents with household waste are being asked to transport their refuse to one of the public disposal sites at Cotton Valley, Mon Bijou, Concordia, or the Peter\u2019s Rest Convenience Center.<\/p>\n
Residents are also asked to reduce the amount waste being disposed by adopting reuse and recycling practices, and to flatten items such as cardboard boxes prior to disposal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
