ST. CROIX — VIPD\u00a0Commissioner Delroy Richards, Sr. has organized a press conference following an upsurge<\/a><\/span> in criminal activity here, according to a press release VIPD’s Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson issued late Monday.<\/p>\n

The event will be held in the\u00a0Commissioner\u2019s Conference Room located at the Rainbow Building, #45 Mars Hill on Wednesday, according to the release.<\/p>\n

While the contents of Richards’ discussion was not revealed, the commissioner is expected to make known steps the VIPD is currently taking to quell crime in the territory, as well as results from his recent trip to New York<\/a><\/span> where he, along with Governor Kenneth Mapp, met with NYPD Police Commissioner William Bratton, and details about a partnership were laid bare.<\/p>\n

During the New York meeting, Mapp said Bratton\u2019s willingness to help was apparent, and he asked the governor to put in writing all the requests as they move to formalize the relationship and get the process started in earnest.<\/p>\n

The governor said three important actions were identified during the meeting that will see immediate attention:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Officers in the Virgin Islands with less than 7 yrs of service will spend six months to train with recruits at the New York City Police Academy.<\/li>\n
  2. Investigators within the territory\u2019s criminal investigation divisions will be sent off to investigating schools in New York to learn the entire process of investigating crimes, handling of forensic evidence and the analysis of dealing with criminal scenes.<\/li>\n
  3. The establishment of a complete infusion of technology in law enforcement in the islands.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
