ST. THOMAS — Governor Kenneth Mapp was named a member of the National Governors Association (NGA) Economic Development and Commerce Committee by NGA Chair, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and NGA Vice Chair Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, according to a press release Government House issued late Monday.<\/p>\n
The Economic Development and Commerce Committee handles issues dealing with transportation infrastructure, telecommunications, international trade promotion, financial services regulation, science and technology development, and affordable housing. Members of the committee ensure that the governors\u2019 views are represented in the shaping of federal policy.<\/p>\n
\u201cI look forward to serving on the NGA Economic Development and Commerce Committee,\u201d said Governor Mapp. \u201cAs governors, we are uniquely positioned to influence federal legislation and regulations that affect economic development and commerce policies.\u201d<\/p>\n
Founded in 1908, NGA is the collective voice of the nation\u2019s governors and one of Washington, D.C.\u2019s most respected public policy organizations. Its members are the governors of the 55 states, territories and commonwealths.<\/p>\n
NGA provides governors and their senior staff members with services that range from representing states on Capitol Hill and before administrations on key federal issues to developing and implementing innovative solutions to public policy challenges through the NGA Center for Best Practices.<\/p>\n
In February, Mapp joined the nation\u2019s governors in Washington, DC for the NGA’s Winter Meeting, where issues affecting states and territories, as well as to share best practices to address some of the nation\u2019s challenges, were discussed.<\/p>\n
“The NGA Winter Meeting is an opportunity to meet with our colleagues and discuss the many issues facing us as we govern.\u00a0 This meeting is a chance to examine great ideas from around the country so we can push forward in areas such as jobs, education, and healthcare, and government efficiency,” Mapp said in February. “As a new member of the NGA, I am looking forward to meeting and networking with my colleagues.”<\/p>\n
