TORTOLA — As British Virgin Islands joins the rest of the world in celebrating International Literacy Day on Tuesday, President of the BVI Reading Council Teacher H Linden Smith says the state of literacy in the territory is still cause for concern.<\/p>\n
Smith was a guest on local radio station ZBVI 780 AM\u2019s Passions Programme with Host Malcia Rymer yesterday morning, where she\u00a0said there was a loud cry worldwide about the state of literacy.<\/p>\n
She said its one of the reasons they decided this year to put on a walk for literacy on Saturday, September 12th which would be held territory wide.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ability of our students to use literacy, to read, wrote and understand in and out of school, all of us, most of know what is been happening. We hear employers complaining about the ability of employees to communicate, to speak write think and all the others, she said, So we decided to walk for literacy this year for the entire territory.<\/p>\n
Smith said the walk is for everyone concerned about the state of literacy. She also believes that more could be done, even as great strides have been made.<\/p>\n
The walk will be held in different locations across the territory on September 12th starting at 5am.\u00a0Among them Tortola East: From the East End\/Long Look Community Centre to the Bridge and back.<\/p>\n
Tortola Central: From Qwomar to the Administration Complex, Tortola West: From the West End Basketball Court to the Foot of Zion Hill and back<\/p>\n
North Sound (V.G.): From The Bond to Midway toward The Valley, From the Marina, walking around the Valley and back<\/p>\n
Anegada: From the Claudia Creque Educational Centre to the Botanical Garden<\/p>\n
Jost Van Dyke: From the Jost Van Dyke School, around the Bottom\/Great Harbour and back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
