ST. THOMAS — Three women here were injured on Sunday, September 20 while crossing\u00a0the street southward from Duffy\u2019s Love Shack located in Red Hook by a drunk driver who overtook another vehicle that stopped to give the pedestrians a chance to cross, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson made known this afternoon.<\/p>\n

According to the report filed, the women made the move to cross after acknowledging that the first driver,\u00a0traveling eastward on the same roadway, stopped just before the speed bump allowing them to cross the street.<\/p>\n

But the women — who had already crossed the eastbound lane and were in the westbound lane — were struck by a Nissan Frontier, whose driver had overtaken the vehicle that had stopped in front of him allowing the women to cross the street.<\/p>\n

The victims were rushed to the Roy Lester Schneider Hospital having sustained various non-life threatening injuries. Victim #1 sustained a contusion to the head, a broken front tooth and several abrasions about the body and face. Victim #2 sustained abrasions to the leg area and an injury to the back; while Victim #3 sustained an injury to the back.<\/p>\n

Gary E. Garten, 55, of Sapphire, the operator of the Nissan Frontier, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence\/negligent driving.\u00a0His bail was set at $500 by court order.<\/p>\n

All three victims were kept under observation at the medical facility and their condition at the current time remains unknown.<\/p>\n
