ST. THOMAS — The Virgin Islands Next Generation (viNGN) recently welcomed its first cohort of the University of the Virgin Islands’ (UVI) Bachelor of Business Administration-Information System and Technology (BBA-IST) students and viNGN interns Darcia Wilkinson, Shakaja Mercer, Vendel Williams, Adeto Garnette Jr., Jovonn Industrious, and Dave Schjang, a press release the government-owned entity issued on Monday has made known.<\/p>\n
All six students here along with Brittany Williams of St. Croix will be receiving real-world experience with viNGN for Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters as part of their curriculum to prepare them for their May 2016 graduation, according to viNGN.<\/p>\n
The Information Systems and Technology\u00a0(IST) major prepares students for a\u00a0professional, consulting, and\/or entrepreneurial career within the field of information technology, according to UVI’s catalog. This program combines theoretical foundation with hands-on practical experiences to provide students with a comprehensive academic technology experience that prepares them to be successful in the ever-evolving digital economy, it added.<\/p>\n
The catalog further states that the program also includes six credits of elective courses that may be applied to accommodate the personal and professional interests of each student, providing a foundation in contemporary information technology that can be applied within any organizational or academic context.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are extremely thrilled to welcome these students who are truly the Next Generation of technological leaders here in the Virgin Islands and beyond,” said viNGN President and CEO Dr. Tonjia Coverdale. “On another note, as the author of the BBA-IST degree, I am tremendously proud of all of them for taking a bold step and being academic pioneers in the information technologies and role models for all K-16 students here in the Virgin Islands.<\/p>\n
“Words cannot express the joy that I feel that our very own Virgin Islanders are preparing to lead us into the Next Generation. I am thankful that viNGN is able to assist in their preparation,” she added.<\/p>\n
On August 21, 2015, viNGN announced its ongoing initiative and effort to educating all Virgin Islanders in Information Technology. Through providing practical experience for the first graduating class in this cutting edge new program in UVI\u2019s School of Business, viNGN says it has taken the forefront in ensuring that each graduate receives the best practical experience to succeed in the technological sector.<\/p>\n
