ST. CROIX — In a press release issued this morning, the Virgin Islands Police Department apologized for what it says was misinformation it relayed to the public concerning the shooting death that occurred at Halfpenny Beach (Ha’Penny) on Friday night.<\/p>\n

The victim has now been identified as\u00a0Kimoy Lynch and not Rasheed Edwards as previously reported<\/a><\/span>. According to police sources, the wrong name was given because police had a hard time identifying the victim, whose face was badly disfigured with gunshot wounds.<\/p>\n

Lynch was found\u00a0dead with multiple gunshot wounds about his body, VI Consortium learned through a police source. The incident was subsequently confirmed by VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson.<\/p>\n

In a brief telephone interview with The Consortium on Saturday morning, Jackson said the 911 emergency call center received notification of the incident just after 10:00 p.m. last night, after receiving reports of a \u201cdisturbance\u201d in the area. Police arrived on the scene and started to conduct a search, and found the dead man\u2019s body in the vicinity of the beach but far away from a Beach Club to the east of Halfpenny.<\/p>\n

The Consortium arrived on the scene about 7:50 a.m. on Saturday and met with police personnel who were searching for evidence, however they were not authorized to divulge any information to the media.<\/p>\n
