ST. CROIX – The Virgin Islands now has one more name in the national spotlight as Jordan Paul<\/a><\/span>,\u00a0an independent filmmaker from St. Croix and now social media influencer, was featured in this\u00a0week\u2019s paper issue of the pop culture magazine, “Entertainment Weekly”, a press release issued on Sunday night revealed.<\/p>\n

Paul is showcased in the November 6 issue, which also doubles this year as the magazine\u2019s\u00a0popular \u201cHoliday Movie Preview.\u201d The 24-year-old\u2019s feature can be found just two pages from\u00a0the cover in the publication\u2019s staple multi-page spread called \u201cThe Must List.\u201d The list counts\u00a0down the top ten hottest things that their editors love every week. Paul was ranked this week\u00a0as number five, and their digital pick, for his high energy dance parties, which he hosts on the\u00a0newly trending app called Periscope.<\/p>\n

Periscope is an app which allows individuals to live stream video directly to an audience from\u00a0their mobile devices. Paul said he downloaded the app when it was first released in March of\u00a0this year, but only recently started streaming what he calls \u201cThe Official Dance Party\u201d three\u00a0months ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was live streaming on the app one day while cleaning my room, and I started dancing to the\u00a0music that was playing,\u201d Paul said. \u201cThe viewers really liked it, so I said we\u2019ll do it again\u00a0tomorrow, and they were excited to tune in–that\u2019s how it started.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paul\u2019s Periscope channel, which can be found by searching \u201cJordan K. Paul\u201d, now has a little\u00a0over 2,500 followers and amassed 2.2 million hearts–a way which viewers \u201clike\u201d what is being\u00a0live-streamed. He now occasionally hosts his dance parties in public, and has even taken the\u00a0party on tour–cross country–during a road trip to the September 2015 Periscope Summit in\u00a0New York City.<\/p>\n

The day of the summit, Paul was also featured in an article on website TubeFilter.com, which\u00a0said the Virgin Islander is dancing his way to Periscope stardom.\u00a0Paul said he enjoys that he can interact with his followers in real-time, and often has them pick\u00a0the music he groovesto. Many times, viewers can even get a glimpse of the giant Virgin Islands\u00a0flag proudly hanging in the background on the wall of his studio apartment.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a great reminder that even somebody from a small place can do great things,\u201d he said.\u00a0This is not Paul\u2019s first experience with a large social media audience. The born and raised\u00a0Crucian, who moved to Los Angeles in 2013, started a video blog, or vlog, four years ago on\u00a0YouTube which chronicled his journey of moving from St. Croix to California. That vlog, which\u00a0he continues today, now has just over 2,400 subscribers.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never join these apps simply to gain a ton of followers or have really big numbers. I just like\u00a0sharing parts of my life with people,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you like watching my journey? Great! If not?\u00a0That\u2019s fine too. I\u2019m going to keep sharing my story, because I love doing it.\u201d\u00a0Paul graduated from St. Croix\u2019s St. Joseph High School in 2009, and went on to graduate from\u00a0DeSales University with a B.A. in Television and Film Production. He also attended New York
\nFilm Academy\u2019s Summer Film Workshop at Harvard University.<\/p>\n

Currently, Paul is building up his other social media accounts, while in the beginning stages of\u00a0producing some independent film projects. He said his main focus will always be simply sharing\u00a0his stories, and giving others the courage to do so in the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to inspire others to get out there and do what they want to do, always reach for their\u00a0goals, and keep dreaming,\u201d Paul said.<\/p>\n
