CROIX &#8212; Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett this week fought back a provision in the District of Columbia Fiscal Year 2016 Budget that listed the U.S. Virgin Islands among 39 countries recognized by the local D.C. Government as tax havens, according to a press release issued by Mrs. Plaskett&#8217;s office on Thursday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u201cThis amendment to the D.C. Budget threatens the territory\u2019s hard-earned reputation as being well regulated and compliant with U.S. Federal tax law and authorities, <\/span><span class=\"\">and was a measure <\/span><span class=\"\">that could potentially infringe on our tax incentive programs and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">impede our economic growth,&#8221; Mrs. Plaskett said.<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0&#8221;\u00a0<span class=\"\">Although at first glance this was merely a measure in the District of Columbia\u2019s legislature, the fact that DC\u2019s budget is approved and adopted by the U.S. House of Representatives would have been tacit support of Congress to DC\u2019s adverse designation of the Virgin Islands<\/span><\/span><span class=\"\">,\u201d<\/span><span class=\"\"> Plaskett said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">After <\/span><span class=\"\">working with<\/span><span class=\"\"> the Ambassadors of Barbados and Dominica, as well as the Virgin Islands Chamber of Commerce, Congresswoman Plaskett <\/span><span class=\"\">worked with Members of Congress and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">DC City Council Chairman Phil Mendelson ultimately getting him to agree to repeal the list through emergency legislation at an upcoming\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\"><span class=\"\">District of Columbia\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"\">legislative hearing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Greneda, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the U.S. Virgin Islands were among the Caribbean countries named in the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">The provision was repealed by way of an amendment at a November 3, 2015 Legislative Meeting of the District of Columbia\u2019s City Council.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ST.
