ST. CROIX — Department of Planning and Natural Resources Commissioner Dawn L. Henry announced via press release on \u00a0Monday that DPNR’s Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums received a large pallet of brand new hardback books as a result of the Division\u2019s participation in the Library of Congress Surplus Books Program.<\/p>\n
Staff at the Charles W. Turnbull Regional Library welcomed the arrival of the brand new books last Friday, November 6, 2015, according to the release.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s the Division\u2019s plan to use the surplus books to maximize the collections in the Turnbull Regional Library\u2019s main reading room, then distribute any remaining books to all public libraries territory-wide,” said Commissioner Henry.<\/p>\n
The titles, mostly hardback, include bestsellers, novels, fiction and non-fiction, children, Hispanic, multi-cultural and Caribbean books.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn tough economical challenging times and continuous budget reductions, this is a great avenue for us to build and supplement our public library collections,” said Director of Libraries Ingrid Bough. “We are especially grateful to receive the approximately valued range of $26,000-$33,000 brand new books free of charge.”<\/p>\n
The Division first participated in the program where the initial boxes of books received went to the public libraries on St. Croix.<\/p>\n
Commissioner Henry added: “Through an application for program participation to the Library of Congress facilitated by Director Ingrid Bough, the Virgin Islands public libraries were granted a renewal status to participate in the free surplus books program earlier this year.”<\/p>\n
