CROIX &#8212; Project Promise has announced through a press release issued on Friday, that it&#8217;s once again\u00a0partnered with the National Park Service (NPS) to offer Salt River Bay National Historical\u00a0Park and Ecological Preserve\u2019s (SARI) 2015-2016 <i class=\"\">Ticket to Ride Program<\/i> for the second year. \u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">SARI, the release says, is one of 113 national parks selected to receive a 2015 field trip grant from the National Park Foundation, the official charity of the America\u2019s national parks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Nationally, the goal of the Ticket to Ride Program is to help NPS provide efficient transportation support for over 100,000 students to visit its national parks annually, and to engage the youth in meaningful activities once there.\u00a0 Last year, more than 450 students from St. Croix\u2019s public schools were able to visit and learn more about SARI through the joint efforts of NPS and Project Promise.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Thanks to a grant from the National Park Foundation (NPF), Project Promise through its partnership with NPS, will be able to offer the SARI Ticket to Ride Program to hundreds of sixth graders this school year.\u00a0 This grant, funded in part by Disney, provides funding for materials and logistics to make national park field trips, citizen science projects, Junior Ranger activities, experiential learning opportunities, and more possible, as part of the National Park Foundation\u2019s Open Outdoors for Kids program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18109\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/viconsortium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/saltriverbay_.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18109\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18109\" src=\"https:\/\/viconsortium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/saltriverbay_-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Students learn Salt River Bay Historical National Park  history in 2014.\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/wp.viconsortium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/saltriverbay_-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/wp.viconsortium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/saltriverbay_-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/wp.viconsortium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/saltriverbay_-109x109.jpg 109w, http:\/\/wp.viconsortium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/saltriverbay_-100x100.jpg 100w, http:\/\/wp.viconsortium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/saltriverbay_-225x225.jpg 225w, http:\/\/wp.viconsortium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/saltriverbay_-240x240.jpg 240w, http:\/\/wp.viconsortium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/saltriverbay_.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-18109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students learn Salt River Bay Historical National Park history in 2014.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">This year\u2019s SARI Ticket to Ride Program kicks off on December 7, 2015.\u00a0 The program provides students with the opportunity to get out into the fresh air, while learning more about the history of the park.\u00a0 It\u2019s a\u00a0three-aspect program, designed by NPS and Project Promise President Resa O\u2019Reilly, and includes an introduction to the park at the school, followed by an on-site park tour, and a post-experience in-class visit by the instructor to review what was learned.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u201cWe are very excited to welcome the nearly 500 sixth grade students scheduled to participate in the program this year,&#8221; said O\u2019Reilly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">SARI\u2019s Visitor Center tour introduces students to the national park\u2019s incredible history, and the natural resources it offers.\u00a0 During the on-site tour, students will get at least two opportunities to hike within the park, and experience the beach head and mangrove forests first hand through ranger-led activities.\u00a0 The students will then explore Taino culture through artifacts and a PowerPoint presentation, discover the story of Christopher Columbus\u2019 encounter where it occurred, and learn about Taino cosmology in a craft-making exercise.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">During the post-experience visit to the school, students will participate in a question and answer session about Salt River Bay\u2019s historical and natural significance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u201cThis program is beneficial to the next generation of Crucian school children and the future of NPS on St. Croix\u201d said NPS Superintendent Joel Tutein.\u00a0 \u201cBeing awarded this grant, allows NPS and Project Promise to provide these students with meaningful experiences, and foster a life-long relationship with national parks\u201d, concluded Tutein.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Project Promise is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of at-risk youth on St. Croix by providing empowerment initiatives, cultural programs and family services.\u00a0 To learn more about Project Promise, please visit the website at <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.projectpromisevi.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">www.projectpromisevi.com<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\n<p class=\"\"><em>Feature Image: \u2018Ticket to Ride\u2019 participants learn about Salt River Bay\u2019s history in 2014.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Image Credit: Project Promise.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ST.
