ST. CROIX — Spartan Concrete has had a monopoly on this island for sometime, as all of the company’s competitors have folded, leaving it as the sole major supplier of concrete mortar and other similar products here. But the firm, recently acquired by U.S. Concrete<\/a><\/span>, is seeing new competition from a startup, dubbed High Quality Concrete, a locally-owned company located at #8 Estate Cottage, near the shooting range off the Melvin Evans Highway, that intends to remain nimble and be more flexible than its already established competitor.<\/p>\n

The company officially opened on December 1, 2015. Founded and operated by the owners of the Stop and Shop Supermarket in Frederiksted, High Quality Concrete boasts five concrete-transporting trucks, and is opened on Saturdays, unlike Spartan, which remains closed for business on Saturdays and Sundays, save special situations. Six people have part-time employment at the concrete company, although it intends to provide full hours and hire more people once business grows.<\/p>\n

“We cover every corner of St. Croix — from the west end all the way to the east end of the island. We will pour foundation slabs, columns, sidewalks, stairs and steps — we cover all that range, and we will come wherever your house is, because our employees are flexible,” said Quality Concrete founder\u00a0Mohammed Misbeh. “We start from 1 yard and up, and can pour anytime you want,” Mr. Misbeh added. He mentioned the potential of growth in the asphalt business and similar products.<\/p>\n

Mr. Misbeh said the aggregate concrete that they use to mix cement, taken from the Ann Abramson crusher located in Frederiksted, is of the highest quality on island. “The Ann Abramson crusher material is proven and tested,” he said. Spartan Concrete gets its supply from Heavy Equipment, which is also owned by U.S. Concrete.<\/p>\n

The founder concluded by stating that he is looking forward to supplying residents with affordable services. He also praised the firm’s CEO, Ahmad Abdelghani, as always ready and willing to serve customers.<\/p>\n
