CROIX &#8212; In its latest beach water quality monitoring advisory, the Department of Planning and Natural Resources advised St. John residents to stay away from the island&#8217;s five most popular beaches.<\/p>\n<p>According to DPNR,\u00a0Oppenhiemer, Johnson Bay, Frank Bay, Cruz Bay and Great Cruz Bay were not considered safe because\u00a0they exceed the established enterococci bacteria threshold.<\/p>\n<p>Residents on St. Croix and St. Thomas, however, have many choices to fish swim this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>On St. Croix:\u00a0Dorsch, Frederiksted Public Beach, Pelican Cove (Comorant), Rainbow, Cane Bay and Gentle Winds were deemed safe. DPNR said\u00a0Princess (Condo Row) A \u2013 Mill Harbor, Halfpenny, Princess (CondoRow) B \u2013 Breezez, Grapetree Bay, Shoy\u2019s, Chenay Bay, Protestant Cay, Buccaneer, Cramer Park and New Fort (Ft. Louise Augusta) on St. Croix could not be sampled due to dangerous high wave activity.<\/p>\n<p>On St. Thomas,\u00a0Lindquist, Coki point, Vessup Bay, Brewer\u2019s Bay, Bluebeards, Secret Harbor, Bolongo Bay, Sapphire, Water Bay, Frenchman\u2019s Bay, Hull Bay, Lindbergh Bay and Magen\u2019s Bay are good to go.<\/p>\n<p>High levels of enterococci bacteria and Turbidity may be caused by runoff due to heavy rains,\u00a0heavy marine vessel traffic, high wave activity near the shoreline, irresponsible recreational use,\u00a0etc. Runoff can consist of sediment, pesticides, animal feces and oil &amp; grease, all of which are\u00a0harmful to the waters of the territory, the release added.<\/p>\n<p>DPNR says it will continue to monitor these popular swimming areas. \u00a0The agency also recommended\u00a0that residents\u00a0use their own discretion when swimming or fishing at the designated beaches.<\/p>\n<p>If the waters\u00a0appear muddy or murky or have foul odors, do not swim or fish.
