ST. CROIX — A team of middle school “mathletes” from the Good Hope Country Day School (G.H.C.D.) will represent the St. Croix School District in the territorial MATHCOUNTS competition set for March 30, 2016 on St. Croix, a Department of Education (D.O.E.) press release has revealed.<\/p>\n
According to the release, issued on Friday, the mathletes secured the top spot in the school district\u2019s MATHCOUNTS competition held on Friday at the G.H.C.D. pavilion. The team is coached by Bridget Klein. Church of God Holiness Academy team, coached by Stephen Marcel, placed second and the Elena Christian Jr. High team, coached by Leoba Pelle and Basil Williams, Jr., rounded out the top three teams.<\/p>\n
Mathletes joining the G.H.C.D. team in the territorial MATHCOUNTS competition against the St. Thomas-St. John District team are Carolyn Grimm, G.H.C.D.; Brandon Wilson, Church of God Holiness Academy; Amari DeSouza, Elena Christian Jr. High; Jemal, Boucena, Church of God Holiness Academy; Kareem Henry, Eulalie Rivera Elementary School; and Gidal Williams of the Church of God Holiness Academy.<\/p>\n
The top scorer in the countdown round was 12-year-old Kieran Walters-Sundaram, a 7th grader at G.H.C.D., and 8th grader Amari DeSouza of Elena Christian Jr. High School came in second place.<\/p>\n
Other teams competing in the School District\u2019s MATHCOUNTS competition were Ricardo Richards Elementary, coached by Zahra O\u2019Reilly; John H. Woodson Jr. High, coached by Lisette LaPlace and Donald Bough; Eulalie Rivera Elementary, coached by Delia Leon and Catherine Brown; and Alfredo Andrews, coached by Lorretta Whilby-Royes and Sophia Ritchie.<\/p>\n
St. Croix District Math Coordinator Juanita Boneque, who organized the competition, said she was pleased with the competition this year and praised the participation of students in the elementary grades.<\/p>\n
MATHCOUNTS is a national program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students. The program focuses on middle school students who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability.<\/p>\n
