ST. CROIX — Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs Commissioner Devin Carrington on Monday announced via press release its annual observances\u00a0Consumer Protection and Weights and Measures Week, taking place March 1-7.<\/p>\n
According to the release, Consumer Protection Week is commemorated to advocate on behalf of the rights of the public to protection as outlined by the Consumer Code; a set of laws that dictate how establishments serving the public should conduct business.<\/p>\n
Weights and Measures Week calls for awareness on the value and quality of essential commodities; as well as the accuracy of tools used to weigh or measure the retail product(s) or service(s) sold to consumers.<\/p>\n
\u201cD.L.CA. invites schools and community organizations to signup for our open house and see what measures the department takes daily to draw attention to the need for consumer protection in the Virgin Islands,” Mr. Carrington said.<\/p>\n
The government agency says it looks forward to continuing a longtime collaboration with the Department of Education to introduce young consumers to the idea of protecting their rights and becoming empowered to ensure they\u00a0receive the full value for\u00a0what they consume.<\/p>\n
Consumer Protection Services (C.P.S.) staff will be on hand to share information and answer questions, according to the release. The entire public is invited to attend and learn more about the Weights and Measure unit and C.P.S. division of D.L.C.A.<\/p>\n
There will be a signup sheet so consumers can provide contact information to receive email updates, tips, and press releases such as the weekly gas and food basket surveys, which provide guidance on which retailers currently offer the lowest prices.<\/p>\n
