{"id":39783,"date":"2016-05-23T20:57:18","date_gmt":"2016-05-23T20:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/viconsortium.com\/?p=39783"},"modified":"2016-05-23T20:57:18","modified_gmt":"2016-05-23T20:57:18","slug":"first-vi-assistive-technology-expo-set-may-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wp.viconsortium.com\/?p=39783","title":{"rendered":"First VI Assistive Technology Expo Set for May 24"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">The Virgin Islands Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Program (VITRAID) is hosting its first Assistive Technology Expo from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, at the Windward Passage Hotel on St. Thomas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">This event will bring together local, regional, and national vendors to meet with the disability community of the Virgin Islands to showcase some of the most advanced and practical assistive technology devices and services available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u201cWe are excited to be able to offer this Assistive Technology Expo to our community residents,\u201d said Sharon Williams, assistant director of VITRAID. \u201cThe focus will be to offer individuals with disabilities, as well as other participants \u2013 teachers, allied\/health professionals and family members \u2013 the opportunity to engage in one-on-one demonstrations of technologies for people with various disabilities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Free presentations will be offered throughout the day by assistive technology experts. There will also be educational sessions on the development and use of communication devices \u2013 also known as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (ACC) \u2013 along with other assistive technology software, applications and devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">VITRAID is a community program committed to providing Virgin Islands residents with free access to information on assistive technology, and training on devices that have been designed for use in the home, school and community.\u00a0 VITRAID operates under the direct supervision and oversight of the University of the Virgin Islands\u2019 Virgin Islands University Center for Excellence in Developmental (VIUCEDD).<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Virgin Islands Technology Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Program (VITRAID) is hosting its first Assistive Technology Expo from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 24, at the Windward Passage Hotel on St. Thomas.
