ST. CROIX \u00a0— After a highly competitive application process, the St. Croix Chamber of Commerce recently announced the 2016 winner of its Annual Scholarship for High School Seniors as Hector Efrain Acosta, Jr., above, a 2016 graduate of St. Croix Central High and the son of Hector Acosta, Sr. and Amanda Jackson-Acosta, according to a press release the Chamber issued Thursday.<\/p>\n

Mr. Acosta, Jr. was presented with the award at an event held at the Cast Iron Pot Restaurant on June 27. The scholarship is for $4,000 payable $1,000 annually over four years as long as the recipient maintains a minimum GPA of 3.0. Mr. Acosta, Jr. has been accepted at Morehouse College in Atlanta and plans to pursue a degree in Business Management with a minor in Communications, according to the release.<\/p>\n

During the scholarship qualifying interview, he revealed to the panelists that after overcoming many obstacles during his formative years — including being the victim of bullying — he learned resilience and adopted as his personal motto, \u201cSelf-Motivation is the best Determination\u201d. Mr. \u00a0Acosta expressed that his goal is to return to St. Croix to start a media company after completing his studies.<\/p>\n

The St. Croix Chamber is currently soliciting applications for its scholarship to be awarded to a final year college student. The scholarship is to be in the amount of $1,000. Interested candidates may obtain the application from the Chamber\u2019s website at www.stxchamber.org or call (340) 718-1435.
