ST. CROIX — The VI Waste Management Authority is advising the public and residents of the Lagoon Street area that phase 3 of the Lagoon Street Pump Station Upgrade Project commenced on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The upgrade represents the continuing efforts of W.M.A. to upgrade the aged wastewater infrastructure in the territory, according to the release. The scope of work for this project includes a pump station pump around system modification, installation of a pressure surge protection system (water hammer), upgrades to standardize the electrical and mechanic systems, installation of an overhead crane, replacement of perimeter fence at the facility and installation of a web-based telemetry system. ‘<\/p>\n

The new telemetry system will provide remote access to monitor operations at the pump station on a daily basis and alert staff of failures thus improving response times, according to the release.<\/p>\n

W.M.A. says the project is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The contract has been awarded to Marco St. Croix, Inc. in the amount of $243,300. Phases I and II of the upgrade project are complete. The final phase of the project is scheduled to be completed by September 1.<\/p>\n

The pump station will remain in operation during the upgrade and the project work is not expected to impact area residents, according to W.M.A.<\/p>\n
