ST. CROIX — Voter turnout so far has been low in today’s primary election, Election Systems Supervisor Caroline Fawkes made known today. She is encouraging residents to come out and vote before 7:00 p.m., which is when polls close.<\/p>\n
As of 3:00 p.m. today, the count shows\u00a0that 1,397 (9.51% of the total registered Democratic Party registered voters) cast their votes in the St. Croix district, and 1,419 (10.03% of the total Democratic Party registered voters) in the St. Thomas-St. John District, according to Ms. Fawkes.<\/p>\n
Voter turnout today has indeed been scarce, with some candidates blaming the dismal showing on a new electioneering law that prohibits campaigning within 200 feet from polling places.<\/p>\n
In a conversation with The Consortium this afternoon, delegate to Congress candidate Ronald Russell said the new law had “dampened” the mood of voters.<\/p>\n
