ST. CROIX — Project Promise<\/a><\/span> — a nonprofit whose vision\u00a0is to give at-risk youth the tools and support they need to live healthier lives — announced on Tuesday that a Caterpillar Project (TCP) student was selected as one of the winners of the Virgin Islands Olympic Committee\u2019s poster contest.<\/p>\n

Ten-year-old Kinaya Davis was selected as the elementary division winner from the St. Croix district of the V.I. Olympic\u2019s poster contest, she was presented with a check for $250 last Thursday. Former TCP program facilitator Ibeliz Guadalupe, who recently relocated to the mainland, said she was extremely proud of Kinaya\u2019s accomplishment.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so excited! I specifically remember for this poster teaching her how to mix white with blue to make light blue for the sky since we didn’t have light blue paint. It was something new for her and she was so captivated about mixing colors to make new colors,\u201d Ms. Guadalupe said.<\/p>\n

The V.I. Olympic Committee announced the poster competition in April, calling for entries to showcase the beauty of the Virgin Islands at the summer Olympic games in Rio. Local students were asked to create posters that represented any aspect of life in the Virgin Islands, whether it was the splendor of the islands, including the colorful flora and fauna, to the diversity and the beauty of the Territory\u2019s people. Those posters also needed to represent the three Olympic values of respect, excellence and friendship.<\/p>\n

The V.I. Olympic committee announced the contest winners in October, and Kinaya\u2019s poster depicted beautiful sea, sands and skies of the Virgin Islands. The winning posters were presented to competitors from the 204 countries who participated in this year\u2019s summer Olympic games in Rio to teach them a little bit about the V.I.<\/p>\n

There were three winners from both districts, each from the categories of elementary school, middle school and high school. \u201cKinaya\u2019s win is truly a proud Caterpillar Project moment\u201d remarked Resa O\u2019Reilly, founder and president.<\/p>\n
