ST. CROIX —\u00a0The President of the Caribbean Drag Racing Association (C.D.R.A.), Ramon Cuencas, is seeking the public\u2019s support after burglars unwittingly devastate upcoming events set to take place at the drag strip facility on the airport road this weekend. The burglary, which is believed to have occurred between Sunday evening and early Tuesday morning, was discovered by Mr. Cuencas on Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n
According to Mr. Cuencas, he discovered the lock on the main gate had been cut open when he arrived at the Racetrack on Tuesday morning\u2014with an unspecified number of persons\u2014to cut the grass.\u00a0 He said upon further inspection, they came to find the concession stand door open, and two of four speakers were sitting outside.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a steel door that we have as the entrance to the concession, whoever it is actually took a sawzall and cut the bracket where the lock is being locked and they basically just took everything,\u201d said Mr. Cuencas in an interview with The Consortium.<\/p>\n
Several items were taken, to include a generator used for the lighting system at the finish line; five large drink coolers, several bottles of alcohol; and juices, sodas, and other beverages from a refrigerator and storage room.<\/p>\n
Mr. Cuencas says the burglary has severely impacted events that the C.D.R.A. planned to host this weekend\u2014with races to be held on Saturday, and a Family Fun-day to be held on Sunday.\u00a0 He says because the generator\u2014which is used for the lighting system at the finish line\u2014was stolen, he would have to hold a board meeting to decide whether or not it is still possible to have the races.<\/p>\n
He added that the family fun-day is a free event for the community with activities to include: an Easter bunny; remote control drag racing; Power Wheels racing for children between the ages 3-6; and performances from 10 bands and Deejays.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a big thing we have this weekend and for this to happen it just, you know, take all the air out our tires,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In light of the grievous situation, he is reaching out to the public for support, assistance, and donations to continue on with the activities. When asked if he had any further remarks, Mr. Cuencas said, \u201cI just hope to see everybody come out and help support us because this has just been a rough one on us right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
