ST. CROIX — Important Senate hearings set to be held at the\u00a0Fritz Lawaetz Legislature in Frederiksted, above, were abruptly canceled today following the breaking of a sewage main that’s stationed near the legislative building.<\/p>\n
“The Legislature of the Virgin Islands announces the immediate closure of the Lagoon Street Complex on St. Croix for the remainder of the day. The closure is a result of a break in the Lagoon Street Pump Station\u2019s force main,” reads a release issued by the 32nd Legislature following the break.<\/p>\n
Senator Novelle Francis told The Consortium that no firm date had been set as of late Tuesday, and that the building may be closed for the remainder of the week, with a possible reopening on Monday.<\/p>\n
A Consortium reporter visited the Legislature about 2:30 p.m. today, only to find the facility — at least on appearance — vacated. There was also a strong stench emanating from the nearby main.<\/p>\n
Meetings set for tomorrow included a truancy measure by Mr. Francis, as well as a single-sex education bill, sponsored by Senator Nereida Rivera-O’Reilly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
