CROIX &#8212; Survivors of hurricanes Irma and Maria in the U.S. Virgin Islands have until\u00a0December 18\u00a0to register for assistance with FEMA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">FEMA has granted the territorial government\u2019s request to extend the deadlines and make the deadline the same for both disasters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u201cWe understand that the ongoing communications challenges and power outages have made it difficult for some Virgin Islanders to register with FEMA, and we want to ensure everyone has an opportunity,\u201d said FEMA\u2019s Federal Coordinating Officer William Vogel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Survivors having connectivity issues may visit any Disaster Recovery Center from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily to meet with an applicant specialist and get help registering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">St. Croix recovery centers are at:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Frederiksted\u00a0at the Rotary Club West, 40 KA-KD Estate LaGrange<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Christiansted\u00a0at the Old Post Office Building at Church and Company streets<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Christiansted\u00a0at Fire Captain Rencelliar I. Gibbs Fire Station at Parcel #1, Estate Cotton Valley, East End.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">St. Thomas recovery centers are at:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Charlotte Amalie at the New Hotel Company Omar Brown Fire Station, Conference Room #108, 100A Ross Taarenberg.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Estate Bordeaux at the Bordeaux Farmers Market, 109 East Bordeaux<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Survivors who have connectivity may register online at\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/fema.pr-optout.com\/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d9262%40%26JDG%3c%3a9%3a-%3b3%40%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MO&amp;RI=1731304&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=34182&amp;Action=Follow+Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u class=\"\">DisasterAssistance.gov<\/u><\/a>\u00a0or by phone at\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\"><strong class=\"\">800-621-3362<\/strong>. Individuals who have a speech disability or hearing loss and use TTY should call\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">800-462-7585 directly. Those who use 711 or Video Relay Service (VRS) may call 800-621-3362.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. (local time) seven days a week. Operators are standing by to assist survivors in multiple languages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Survivors may be eligible for grants to repair and rebuild their homes and\/or replace essential personal property. FEMA grants do not have to be repaid, but they cannot duplicate benefits from other sources, such as insurance coverage. FEMA assistance is nontaxable and will not affect eligibility for Social Security, Medicaid or other federal benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">The extension also gives survivors more time to apply for low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the federal government\u2019s primary source of money for long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps businesses of all sizes, private nonprofit organizations, homeowners and renters fund repairs or rebuilding efforts and cover the cost of replacing lost or damaged personal property.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Survivors may visit a Disaster Recovery Center, call SBA\u2019s Customer Service Center at\u00a0<strong class=\"\">800-659-2955<\/strong>or visit\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/fema.pr-optout.com\/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d9262%40%26JDG%3c%3a9%3a-%3b3%40%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MO&amp;RI=1731304&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=34181&amp;Action=Follow+Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u class=\"\">www.sba.gov\/disaster<\/u><\/a>\u00a0for more information about disaster loans.
