ST. JOHN — An off-island lineman working alongside the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority in St. John was injured during a Monday morning carjacking attempt, and was scheduled to be airlifted out of the territory for further medical attention after his skull was fractured during the incident,\u00a0V.I.P.D. Commissioner Delroy Richards said during Governor Kenneth Mapp’s Monday evening hurricane recovery press briefing on St. Croix.<\/p>\n
The attempted carjacking was perpetrated by a known mentally ill man, the commissioner said.<\/p>\n
The incident, which occurred early Monday, saw the mentally ill man attempting to drive away with a truck that had at least two linemen sitting on the back area of the vehicle, causing at least one of them to fall out, Mr. Richards said.<\/p>\n
The commissioner said the suspect was taken into custody, and would be put through the justice system.<\/p>\n
Mr. Richards also wished the injured lineman — part of the\u00a0BCC Electrical Services from Missouri — a speed recovery. The governor did the same, and asked residents to greet linemen with gratitude when seen working to restore power throughout the islands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
