The University of Virgin Islands Psychology Club and Jared\u2019s Keepers Foundation, Inc. will host on Saturday the International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day in Northwest Wing rooms 102-103 on the St. Croix campus, UVI announced recently.<\/p>\n
The event is free. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., and the function begins at 10 a.m. and runs until 12 noon.<\/p>\n
Saturday’s event, the 19th annual, is part of multiple functions spread across the globe, growing from a few locations within the continental U.S. to a worldwide movement with thousands of locations. The Psychology Club has sponsored the local event since 2011, and was the first Survivor Day gathering in the Caribbean, according to UVI.<\/p>\n
UVI explained the event as a day for hope, healing, and support from those who are survivors of suicide loss. A film being shown at the function is entitled \u201cThe Journey: A Story of Healing and Hope\u201d, and is about suicide loss experience. There will also a new follow-up featurette, “The Journey Revisited”, in which six of the people from the film three years ago reflect on how their grief and healing journey is evolving.<\/p>\n
Deb Martin, founder of Jared\u2019s Keepers Foundation, Inc., a suicide prevention and awareness effort focused at teens, said, \u201cI lost my only child, Jared, to suicide at age 17 and it is my goal to keep other parents from feeling the pain I live with each day. This day has brought me close to others here on St. Croix who have also lost friends and loved ones to suicide. Suicide is one of the only things in life that does not discriminate for any reason.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
