CROIX &#8212; Some Virgin Islanders who sustained damages as a result of hurricanes Irma or Maria may receive a letter from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) stating they are ineligible for disaster assistance. However, if<\/span><span class=\"\">\u00a0you are a survivor who received an ineligibility letter, don\u2019t give up. It may not be the last word from FEMA. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">An ineligibility letter may mean that FEMA does not have all the information needed to approve an application for assistance. For example, you might need to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Provide information to prove occupancy or ownership of the damaged property<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Provide proof of identity<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Provide documentation to prove disaster damage<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Return insurance information<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">You may be found ineligible for assistance for various reasons, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul class=\"\">\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Your home is determined safe to occupy<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">The home is not your primary residence<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Another member of your household has already registered for FEMA assistance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Federal disaster assistance is designed to help with uninsured or underinsured losses caused by the disaster. The disaster assistance gives many a starting place or \u201chand up\u201d to begin the recovery process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Applicants who wish to appeal a decision may do so in writing within 60 days from the date the ineligibility letter was received. Guidelines for appeals can be found in the Applicant\u2019s Handbook sent to everyone who registered with FEMA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">At any time, survivors may call the FEMA Helpline at <strong class=\"\">800-621-3362<\/strong> or\u00a0<strong class=\"\">TTY 800-462-7585<\/strong> to update their application information or get questions answered. Those who use 711-Relay or Video Relay Services may call 800-621-3362.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. (local time) seven days a week until further notice. Operators are standing by to assist survivors in English, Spanish and many other languages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Survivors who have not yet registered for assistance may do so at the telephone numbers above, at <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/fema.pr-optout.com\/Tracking.aspx?Data=HHL%3d9440%3a%26JDG%3c%3a9%3a-%3b3%40%26SDG%3c90%3a.&amp;RE=MO&amp;RI=1731304&amp;Preview=False&amp;DistributionActionID=37878&amp;Action=Follow+Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u class=\"\">www.DisasterAssistance.gov<\/u><\/a> or at one of the nine Disaster Recovery Centers across the territory.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ST.
