{"id":58936,"date":"2017-12-06T22:59:23","date_gmt":"2017-12-06T22:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/viconsortium.com\/?p=58936"},"modified":"2017-12-06T22:59:23","modified_gmt":"2017-12-06T22:59:23","slug":"mapp-renews-state-of-emergency-declaration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wp.viconsortium.com\/?p=58936","title":{"rendered":"Mapp Renews State Of Emergency Declaration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Governor Kenneth Mapp has renewed the declaration of a state of emergency for the U.S. Virgin Islands in <a href=\"https:\/\/viconsortium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Renewal-Order-and-Proclamation-Declaring-A-State-Of-Emergency-4.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">an official order<\/span><\/a>, a Government House release made known late Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The proclamation renews the <a href=\"https:\/\/viconsortium.com\/featured\/irma-state-of-emergency-12-01-am\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">territory\u2019s state of emergency declaration<\/span><\/a>, which was initially declared effective September 5, through January 4, 2018, unless earlier lifted or extended.<\/p>\n<p>A state of emergency empowers a government to perform actions that it would normally not be allowed to. A government can declare a state of emergency during a disaster, civil unrest, or armed conflict. In September 2016, Lieutenant Governor Osbert Potter, then-acting governor, declared a state of emergency following a surge in gun violence <a href=\"https:\/\/viconsortium.com\/featured\/acting-governor-osbert-potter-declares-state-of-emergency-curfew-not-issued\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">that was rocking St. Croix in particular.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With the USVI still in active recovery mode, the new declaration allows for the current order of operations to continue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Governor Kenneth Mapp has renewed the declaration of a state of emergency for the U.S. Virgin Islands in an official order, a Government House release made known late Wednesday.
