The Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) has invited residents of the St. Thomas community to volunteer their services for a clean-up drive of downtown Charlotte Amalie on<\/span> Saturday.<\/span><\/p>\n

Entities leading the charge in the \u201cRock City Clean Streets\u201d\u00a0initiative include the Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service \u2013 St. Thomas (VIMAS), Department of Planning and Natural Resources \u2013 Coastal Zone Management (DPNR-CZM) and the\u00a0Virgin Islands Conservation Society (VICS), D.P.N.R. said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The organizers are inviting all interested volunteers to assemble at\u00a09:00 a.m. in the Fort Christian Parking Lot.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The volunteers will be placed into teams which will target Charlotte Amalie West beginning at Emile Griffith Ball Park, the Waterfront and Backstreet areas and Charlotte Amalie East to include Havensight.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even after almost three months, the effects that hurricanes Irma and Maria had on the transfer of debris is unsightly and environmentally damaging. \u201cThis is our third Rock City Clean Streets event since the storms, and the support keeps growing. I\u2019m especially excited that we are working with the UVI Biology Club to recycle all aluminum cans, and all rigid plastic will be separated for the Beach Plastics Recycling Program,\u201d said\u00a0Kristina<\/span>\u00a0Edwards<\/span>,\u00a0Education & Outreach Coordinator\u00a0of the Coastal\u00a0Zone\u00a0Management Division. \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to\u00a0continuing this momentum\u00a0with the Charlotte Amalie community to keep our Rock City streets clean.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAfter the hurricanes, a lot of plastic debris is now overflowing from garbage bin sites and is collecting in some storm drains,\u201d said Howard Forbes Jr., St. Thomas coordinator, Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service. \u201cWe\u2019re aiming to improve the aesthetics and overall health of the environment by removing this debris before it can enter our oceans and affect our wildlife.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Volunteers will also be provided with water and all cleaning supplies. However, volunteers are asked to bring along a refillable water bottle to help minimize debris.<\/span><\/p>\n
