ST. CROIX — After its roof was completely destroyed by Hurricane Maria, the Frederiksted Post Office — whose mailbox holders were receiving their mail from the Kingshill Post Office following the devastating storm — will open a temporary location beginning Tuesday in Frederiksted, The Consortium has learned, a move that may come as a relief to residents of Frederiksted.<\/p>\n
The temporary location is located at 2B Kingstreet on the corner near the Frederiksted Fort and the children’s park. It’s the building once utilized by the Department of Human Services.<\/p>\n
The location will be open on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekly, and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The only service being offered at the temporary location on Tuesday will be the handing out of mail; retail services will be available at a later date, according to USPS officials familiar with the details.<\/p>\n
The new location will be utilized until the old facility is repaired, which may take no less than six months. As for the old Frederiksted Post Office, the inside has been cleaned, and local USPS officials are awaiting roofing materials to arrive. Once the materials are on island, the old roof will be removed and replaced, and from there work will continue on the building’s interior.<\/p>\n
USPS has been accommodating its Caribbean destinations, including the USVI and Puerto Rico, following Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The storms had interrupted the normal routes of mail delivery and levied immense damage on some USPS facilities. Following the hurricanes, post offices in many locations opened on weekends and offered package delivery, in an effort to accommodate customers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
