ST. THOMAS — The Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will host a public meeting on Wednesday, April 3, to share information and hear feedback from the community relative to the Turpentine Run Project, a release USACE issued Tuesday has made known. The meeting will be held at the Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School Auditorium at 9-1-12A Bovoni from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Also in attendance will be Department of Public Works Commissioner Nelson Petty, Jr.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Turpentine Road Project, authorized under Section 205 of the Flood Risk Reduction Continuing Authorities Program, is to reduce flood damage to the Nadir development along Turpentine Run, the Corps said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the release, a previous study conducted by the Corps determined a recommended plan which included the construction of a 460-foot long concrete “U” shape channel, a drop structure and 170-foot long sheet pile wall along the developed side of the channel, a 260-foot levee along the northern edge of Nadir, a 1,300-foot long levee starting south of the new Bovoni Road Bridge and ending at the Nadir racetrack and Interior drainage conveyance from the existing small concrete channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Corps received additional funding under the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 to complete an addendum to the previous study confirming the engineering, environmental and economic aspects of the project, the release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Corps believes this study will benefit from public involvement and encourages participation in the National Environmental Policy Act process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
