{"id":75034,"date":"2019-06-04T21:19:41","date_gmt":"2019-06-04T21:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/viconsortium.com\/?p=75034"},"modified":"2019-06-04T21:19:42","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T21:19:42","slug":"be-prepared-for-possible-power-outage-water-interruption-during-hurricane-season-wapa-advises","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/wp.viconsortium.com\/?p=75034","title":{"rendered":"Be Prepared For Possible Power Outage, Water Interruption During Hurricane Season, WAPA Advises"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As the territory enter&#8217;s the 2019 Hurricane Season, The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority is reminding its employees and customers to be prepared for potential storm activity that could temporarily interrupt electrical and potable water service.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the lessons learned after the 2017 hurricanes, WAPA said it has reorganized and provided staff awareness of its approach to emergency response, safety, hurricane preparedness, and recovery response. \u201cWe have developed internal measures to assure better coordination and financial accountability with local and federal agencies prior to and post-storm.\u00a0Additionally, we have and will maintain extended public access and social media communications, outreach and messaging initiatives on hurricane safety, as well as pertinent information about our electrical and potable water services prior to and post storm,\u201d said Executive Director, Lawrence J. Kupfer.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow these storm tips and be prepared, according to WAPA:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Before a Storm:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stay aware and check the weather forecast before heading outdoors. Check your emergency kit, unplug major appliances, and charge cell phones in case you lose power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>During a Storm:<\/strong>\u00a0Take shelter inside a sturdy building away from windows and doors. Avoid contact with conductors of electricity such as appliances, metal objects, and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>After a Storm:<\/strong>\u00a0Never touch any downed or low-hanging wires, including telephone or TV wires as they might be touching a power line.
