ST. CROIX — An accident that occurred at about 1:17 p.m. Thursday in Peter’s Rest at the corner near Cool Out Bar could have turned deadly fast: a Ferrol Trucking tractor trailer transporting a tank carrying between 12,000 to 16,000 gallons of liquified gas, lost control and flipped on its left side while the driver was attempting to turn the corner, heading from East to West, according to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte, who was on the scene.
The accident mangled the trailer and left the tank with the gas lying on its side. Police blocked each entrance leading to that area as first responders — among them the V.I.P.D.’s Traffic Division/Motor Carrier, the Dept. of Licensing and Consumer Affairs, St. Croix Rescue, the VI Fire Service and Emergency Medical Technicians — worked to treat the driver and secure the tanker.
Mr. Dratte said a major operation to transfer the gas from the compromised tank to another was ongoing. He also gave an update on the driver, stating that while he was injured in one of his legs, he had survived the accident and was stable.
The V.I.P.D. is advising motorists to be mindful of the traffic reroutes at all points heading to Peter’s Rest near the Cool Out Bar area.
