Breaking News / Featured / News / Virgin Islands / October 14, 2014

The Department of Education has announced that ALL public schools in the Territory, including those in the St. Thomas-St. John District, will OPEN on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

The announcement came just before 5:30 Tuesday morning after officials monitored overnight weather conditions.

“After continuing to monitor the weather reports yesterday evening, the Department made the decision to close the St. Thomas-St. John public schools as a proactive measure,” Education Commissioner Donna Frett-Gregory said early Tuesday morning. “Fortunately, we were spared any major impact from the storm and after continuing to closely monitor the weather and consulting with the leadership team from the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency this morning, we have decided that it is safe to open schools. Our St. Thomas-St. John District team has confirmed that buses will be available and on the road at the usual time.”
Buses are also up and running on St. Croix and District schools are expected to open as normal.

This is an update from a previous report on Monday night, when the Department announced that all public schools on St. Thomas and St. John would be closed on Oct. 14.
