Hansen Loses Senate Seat With Total Of 2,089 Write-In, Sticker Votes

News / Virgin Islands / November 16, 2014

Following widespread confusion about the status of Sen. Alicia “Chucky” Hansen being reelected to another Senate term, official results from the November 4 General Election, St. Croix District, issued Saturday night put rumors to rest. It showed that of the 3,282 write-in votes cast, Hansen garnered a total of 2,089 votes–including write-in and sticker votes–not giving her enough votes to be reelected as a member of the 31st Legislature.

In order for the veteran senator to retain her seat, she would have had to beat out at least Sen. Nereida Rivera O’Reilly, who snagged seventh place in the Legislative contest with a total of 4,755 votes. Only seven senators are voted in from the St. Croix District.

The VI Consortium can confirm rumors had been circulating online and through local talk radio that Hansen had garnered votes in excess of 4,000.

Hansen’s name was taken off the General Election ballot by order of the Supreme Court on Oct. 24, due to lengthy court battles citing moral turpitude and then the senator’s late filing of her nomination papers for the November 4 elections. Hansen then launched an aggressive write-in campaign and days before the election, her supporters were also informed they could paste the Senator’s name onto the ballot with pre-printed stickers containing the name ‘Alicia “Chucky” Hansen.’

On Nov. 6, the VI Consortium reported Hansen’s failed attempt to retain her Senate seat when election results were still unofficial.
