2015 Weekly Unemployment Benefit Capped At $477

Featured / Government / News / Virgin Islands / December 24, 2014

Department of Labor (DOL) Commissioner Albert Bryan, Jr., has announced that the maximum amount of weekly unemployment money Virgin Islands employees will be eligible to receive in the year beginning January 4, 2015 is $477, based on the department’s own calculations.

According to Bryan, citing Virgin Islands Unemployment Insurance Act, Title 24, Chapter 12, Section 303(c), the Maximum Weekly Benefit Amount (MWBA) shall be an amount equal to 65 percent of the established average weekly wage in insured work rounded to the next lower dollar. The established average weekly wage based on employment and wage statistics is $733.44, 65 percent of which is $477 per week.

Bryan also announced the taxable wage base as $22,900.00, which is 60 percent $38,139.02 —  the established average annual wage, statistics gathered by DOL reveal. According to Title 24, Chapter 12, Section 308(c) of the Virgin Islands Unemployment Insurance Act, the Taxable Wage Base is 60 percent of the average annual wage in insured work rounded to the nearest one hundred dollars.

Additionally, Bryan revealed that the Worker’s Compensation maximum benefit amount for Disability Income Benefits has increased from $480.00 per week or $96.00 per day, to $489.00 per week or $97.80 per day. The adjusted figures will affect all injuries that occur on or about January 1, 2015.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
