Fatal Car Accident In La Reine Leaves One Dead, One Critically Injured

Featured / News / Virgin Islands / January 2, 2015

It was the worst accident that I’ve ever seen since doing this job. I have not been able to sleep.

A deadly accident on Thursday near the La Reine Chicken Shack and the Kingshill Post Office has left one woman dead and another critically injured, paramedics on the scene, who were involved in cutting the vehicle to remove the victims, have confirmed to VI Consortium.

According to paramedics, the accident happened between the hours of 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., and involved a car coming from the Kingshill Post Office area, when the driver, who had recently left J’ouvert Morning in Frederiksted, fell asleep behind the wheel and slammed into an SUV.

“It was the worst accident that I’ve ever seen since doing this job,” one paramedic told VI Consortium, “I have not been able to sleep.”

There were five young women in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The victim who died sat in the passenger side, while the three others who sat in the back seat, survived along with the driver of the vehicle. The one critically injured woman, who was sitting in the middle at the back, is being flown out this morning for medical care, after she was thrust from the back to the front of the car by the accident’s impact, hitting the windshield and breaking her spine in three places.

Also, the deceased victim most likely was hit on her chest upon impact, one paramedic said, adding that the vehicle was so disfigured that the roof had to be cut in half to get the victims out.

The SUV involved in the accident only sustained a dent from the accident’s impact, and the person who drove it sustained no visible injuries.

This story will be updated as more information comes in.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
