The Christiansted National Historic Site recently began a series of renovations on the second floor gallery of Fort Christiansvaern. Repairs began the week of Jan. 20 and will include the complete documentation and replacement of the exterior second floor gallery, and improvement of the internal French drainage system.
For visitor safety, the second floor gallery will remain closed until repairs are completed in March. A safety tunnel has been erected within the Fort’s main entrance, Sally Port, to provide access to the interior of the Fort and the ramparts.
According to information received from the National Park Service (NPS), a preservation team will work on the project for six weeks, Monday through Friday.
While the Fort is open to the public during renovations, there may be times of temporary closure as the project progresses, NPS says.
The program is being supervised by the NPS-Harper’s Ferry Preservation Training Center and is paid for through Discretionary Emergency Funds from the National Park Service.
