3rd Annual “Hearts for the Homeless” Fundraiser On February 10

Featured / News / Religion / Virgin Islands / January 29, 2015

The Lighthouse Mission on St. Croix is once again gearing up to host its annual “Hearts for the Homeless – Care for the Kids” charity event and auction on Tuesday, Feb. 10 at Tutto Bene Restaurant in Gallows Bay from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Now in its third year, the event is held to generate funds to finance operating needs and facility upgrades at the Lighthouse, according to Debbie Cullen, director.

Attendees will be treated to a buffet of taste-size desserts from local restaurants, a specialty coffee bar by Twin City Coffee House, and Tutto Bene’s antipasto. There will be live music and the opportunity to shop for jewelry, dining, service, or excursion packages.

A live auction will be conducted by Smokey Odom. To preview the items, go here.

The Lighthouse, located in the heart of Sunday Market Square in Christiansted, opens its doors — and its arms — to the St. Croix community in many ways.

The facility hosts up to 30 children in its after-school program, where youngsters are provided with snacks, homework assistance, and recreation, as well as are taught biblical principles, character development, and life skills, Cullen pointed out.

In addition, the organization provides hot meals to homeless and needy residents five days a week. Those in need are allowed to use the facility to take showers, and are provided with clothing, shoes, toiletries and hygiene items.

But, Cullen said, those who receive the mission’s goods and services “are encouraged to help pick up around our building and grounds, mop floors,or stock donated items. They get personal attention, encouragement in life skills, and referrals to other service providers.” She said veterans are also offered assistance in connecting with the services they need.

For those wanting to support the efforts of the Lighthouse day-to-day operations,Cullen said volunteer opportunities are available for individuals and groups, and students can earn community service credit hours.

Advanced fundraiser tickets are $30 and are on sale at Undercover Books in Gallows Bay.

For more information, contact Ms. Cullen at (340) 773-3551.
