A St. John man involved in a car crash that left 16-year-old Elivs Smith, Jr. dead and others injured at about 5 a.m. on Jan. 9, has been arrested and charged with negligent homicide, police spokesperson Melody Rames announced Thursday.
Lester Jackson, Jr., 26, was taken into custody at 11 a.m. on Jan. 29 after an investigation by traffic enforcement officers into the accident determined that Jackson fell asleep behind the wheel and lost control of the car, causing it to crash into a utility pole.
According to the original report, a 22 year-old man seated in the right rear sustained a head injury; another male was taken from the vehicle in critical condition, and Smith, who was seated in the middle rear died from his injuries. Jackson and the passenger in the front seat were not injured.
Bail for Jackson was set at $10,000, and he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending further court action.
