CHS Student Arrested In Counterfeit Bill Purchase Of Pizza, Soda

Education / News / Virgin Islands / February 26, 2015

Angel Navarro, an 18-year-old St. Croix Central High School student, was arrested on Feb. 23 in connection with the passing of a counterfeit $100 bill to a minor student to purchase food items at an on-campus sale, according to VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson.

On Jan. 28, Central High School officials informed police of a fundraiser that was previously held at the school where a female student gave a staff member a $100 bill for the purchase of two slices of pizza and a soda. After purchasing $6 worth of food, the staff member returned $94 in change to the female student.

On Feb. 8, when reconciling the funds gathered at the fundraiser, the $100 bill was checked with a counterfeit identification pen, at which time it was discovered to be counterfeit.

The student that presented the bill to the staff member was located on Feb. 20, according to police, after having returned to school following a suspension for an unrelated matter. The student and the friend whom she’d made the purchase for were brought before school authorities and questioned about the source of the counterfeit currency. The students explained that Navarro had given them the counterfeit bill to purchase the food items.

Detectives with the Youth Investigation Bureau and the Insular Investigation Unit were brought in on the case and made contact with Navarro on Feb. 23 on Central High’s campus. He was placed under arrest, and charged with passing forged notes and possession of forged notes.

Unable to post bail of $10,000, Navarro was remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility pending his Advise of Rights hearing.
