VIDOL Highlights Program For Laid-Off HOVENSA Employees

Business / Caribbean / Government / News / Virgin Islands / March 3, 2015

As HOVENSA continues its move to fully shut down its oil storage operations, it and its contractors terminated an additional 170 employees on Friday, Feb. 27. In light of the action, the Virgin Islands Department of Labor (VIDOL) is directing separated employees to the department’s federally funded Dislocated Worker program “to ensure that workers are able to get the necessary services required to reconnect with the workforce.”

Department of Labor Commissioner-designee Catherine Hendry said that through the Dislocated Worker program workers are eligible to receive an array of “rapid re-employment” services. The services, which are at no cost to participants, include employment and career counseling, resume preparation, skill assessments, job search and placement, job training, financial planning and other services.

Hendry said VIDOL has taken the necessary steps to ensure that funds are available to assist each dislocated worker in need of assistance. The department also pointed out that some workers continue to be employed at HOVENSA.

Affected HOVENSA employees may access the services at the America Job Center located at 4401 Sion Farm (STE-1) on St. Croix.
