Learn Virgin Islands History At Fort Christiansvaern On Thursday

Education / News / Virgin Islands / March 10, 2015

In commemoration of Virgin Islands History Month being observed in March, a lecture on the history of the Virgin Islands will be held in the Steeple Building of the Christiansted National Historic Site on Thursday, March 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., the National Park Service (NPS) has announced.

The Eastern National bookstore, a cooperating association with NPS, will sponsor the event, which will feature lectures from  three local authors who will share local themes in their work and how Virgin Islands’ history is discussed in the community.

The authors include Richard Schrader, Poet Laureate of the Virgin Islands, whose appearance will be his second in two years. Schrader will read from his past and present works.

Dr. Karen Thurland, who recently published a book on the history of sugar production on St. Croix, will also present from her recent work. And her sister, Anne Thurland, will discuss Virgin Islands participation in the Second World War from her recent work on the 873rd Port Company’s Virgin Islands Orchestra during that period.

The event is free and open to the public.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
