Joe Dale Loomis, 57, of Oregon, who moved to St. Croix on Oct. 22, 2013, pleaded guilty Tuesday in St. Croix District Court to one count of failure to register as a sex offender in connection with an Oregon case in which he was involved, United States Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe announced Tuesday.
According to Sharpe, as part of his plea, Loomis admitted he was convicted of first-degree sodomy, a sex offense, involving a minor in Oregon in 1991.
Sharpe said that on or about Oct. 22, 2013, Loomis traveled from Oregon to St. Croix and from that time through Aug. 19, 2014, Loomis knowingly failed to register as a sex offender on the island, in violation of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA), Sharpe said.
Loomis is facing a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. No sentencing date has been set.
The case was investigated by the United States Marshals Service, and is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rami S. Badawy and Everard E. Potter.
